Those Who Stay Forever

My parents have both died, but I carry them with me all the time. The book is dedicated to them. They are with me in my heart and spirit.

Connections with other people, even our spouses and best friends, are subject to instability and change. But our relationship with our forbears is fixed forever. No matter what happens to us or who hurts us or leaves us, our relationship with our ancestors is permanent. By keeping those who came before us close, we protect our own continuity and anchor ourselves emotionally.

The continuing presence of my parents in my mind and soul sustains me and gives me a new respect for cultures that celebrate their ancestors in belief and ritual.
